South Omaha Main Street is now South 24th. South Omaha was annexed into Omaha in 1915. The city was founded in 1884 and grew rapidly in suport of the meat packing industry. The street has its own charm today but is different than what it was in the heyday of the meat packing industry and Stockyards, which were to the west of Main Street. Today it has many Latin markets and Mexican restaurants. It boasts a tree of life, and many other artistic additions. This includes many murals about the local culture. The post office is a building which high lighted the past as well as the present.
