What's In This Blog

I created this blog for my journal. I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In this blog I keep many of the things I come across as a member of the church. I also share my experiences on the ACE Train and getting to work, my experiences in Manteca where we have lived for three years, and other things I think are noticeable.

St. Martins of Tours Episcopal Church in South Omaha

This church is in South Omaha on South 24th or the old Main Street.  It looks like there are some nice stained glass windows.  I did not venture inside as it was closed.  Appears to have been construct4d in 1899.

South Omaha Main Street

South Omaha Main Street is now South 24th.  South Omaha was annexed into Omaha in 1915.  The city was founded in 1884 and grew rapidly in suport of the meat packing industry.  The street has its own charm today but is different than what it was in the heyday of the meat packing industry and Stockyards, which were to the west of Main Street.  Today it has many Latin markets and Mexican restaurants.  It boasts a tree of life, and many other artistic additions.  This includes many murals about the local culture.  The post office is a building which high lighted the past as well as the present.

Quetzal Mural: South Omaha Mural Project

The Quetzal bird is sacred to Mesoamericans.  The bird has a red chest.  Traditionally this is because it was the spiritual guide for the prince, Tecún Umán, and was present when he was killed, and landed on his wounded body.  Located on the corner of N and 24th.

Aztec Mural: South Omaha Mural Project

This mural is above the store entrances on 24th and N Streets.  It represents  Tlaloc the embodiment of rain and fertility.  It also represent huipiles, a garment worn by Mexican and Guatemalan women.

South Omaha Post Office on the Old Main Street (now 24th)

The post office is at 47 30 So, 24th street.  24th street use to be the main street of South Omaha.  The post office was built in 1899.  It was the high light of South Omaha, which grew quickly because of the meat packing companies in town.  It features classical revival architecture with Roman Corinthian columns.  Historically it also housed government agriculture offices and a military recruiting station but now is dedicated to postal services only.  It reminds everyone that South Omaha has a history independent of Omaha but is now part of Omaha.
