Fort Steele was a military fort to guard the railroad workers while they built a bridge over the North Platte River. It also guarded the bridge after it was done as well as the local communities. I thought the fort was at the rest area but actually it is a couple miles north. Rest area is again accessed from both directions and is north of the freeway.

Wyoming Point of Interest: Lone Tree or Tree Rock
In the center of the I80 is a place to stop as a point of interest. It is between the eastbound and westbound lanes and is accessed from both sides of the freeway. There is no restroom nor amenities, but it is an opportunity to see this tree growing out of a rock. The original transcontinental railroad passed 50 feet from the tree and conductors would often stop to water the tree. It is within visusal sight of the Vedauwoo rocks.
