What's In This Blog

I created this blog for my journal. I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In this blog I keep many of the things I come across as a member of the church. I also share my experiences on the ACE Train and getting to work, my experiences in Manteca where we have lived for three years, and other things I think are noticeable.

Animal Movie: National Geographic: Eden at the end of the World

This is a movie about the animals at the end of the world, between Argentina and Chile, in the Patagonia holds many interesting species of animals in a cruel environment, most noted for its cold wind.  There was the threat of encroachment upon traditional territories, but there has also recently been set aside 700,000 acres as a wildlife preserve.  This movie presented many interesting animals.  I have always been partial to penguins, and we follow a group of Magellanic penguins from mating until the babies are headed to sea.  It is hard work raising a penguin, and both parents go to sea, eating fish and half consuming them, and then returning to share them with the baby.  If they arrive back too slowly, the penguins die, and there are plenty of predators waiting for a meal of a dead penguin.  We also see the sea lion, who is a predator of the penguin, and the orca, who feeds on the sea lion.  The guanaco is a llama like animal.  Once there were over 25 million, and now one million.  The spit at each other over mating rituals, and also carry on neck butting battles for the right to mate.  The elephant seal also conducts similar battles.  There is an interesting colony of 70,000 parrots who live in the sandstone cliffs where they have burrowed out dens.  A parrot baby is very ugly.  There are also condors, which glide on the wind with their tremendous wing span.
There is one animal which does not belong, the beaver.  They were introduced to create a fur trade.  However this effort has failed.  Instead they destroy the natural habitat of trees, and create wetlands with the damning.
I found this look at nature and animals very interesting.  It is interesting how even harsh environments are home to some species.
